gcc-3.3 downloaded from ftp.gnu.org.
Build in directory separate from source.

<sourcedir>/configure  --disable-multilib
(building without the --disable-multilib was another can of worms)

Encountered this error using both AIX xlC and gcc-2.9
for native compiler for "make bootstrap".
(Obtained gcc-2.9 rpm from IBM's download.)
I disabled optimization in the native compiler options,
no change.
