Thanks. I have the exact same versions as you on the Solaris 2.6 and 8 boxes
(I presume 3.3 builds fine on them for you) but not on the Solaris 7 box.
Mine is:
as: WorkShop Compilers 5.0 98/12/21
Do you have the possibility to try the same version as me?

Or we hit an obscure bug in the 5.0 Alpha version of the Sun assembler.
