I get the same error on irix. For me, the regression was introduced by
this change

hmm - that was my guess, except that cygwin bootstraped fine - however i
subsequently realised cygwin gcc must not be weak symbol friendly, so its a
non-issue there.
(would of tried it on the alpha, but bootstraping on this alpha isnt
something i want to do every day - mainly because it takes all day...)
