   Is your shell /bin/sh? There is a known problem with this
   shell and libstdc++, see http://gcc.gnu.org/install/specific.html

My shell it /bin/tcsh. However, I subsequently discovered from others that for the build to succeed under sparc Solaris 8, the --disable-multilib configure option had to be included.
