This is probably the problem fixed in HEAD with:

* configure.in (extra_ranlibflags_for_target): New variable.
(*-*-darwin): Add -c to ranlib commands.
* configure (tooldir): Handle extra_ranlibflags_for_target.
The patch would need to be rewritten to apply to the 3.3 branch.
