Configuring in the source directory is supposed to work and is
supported, contrary to the many people who claim otherwise.  Whether
it *does* work is a different story - but when it doesn't it's a bug.

Could you narrow down the specific patch that broke it?  That would be
helpful (esp since I tried your build on my machine, and it worked).
