The system in question has a limited lifetime, (expected
replacement in January 2003) and so it does not seem
prudent at this time to chase the problem further. If
someone else is interested in looking into this, I will
arrange to provide telnet access to the machine.

Since this report was against gcc2.95, and a clarification
will probably not be forthcoming, I close this report. If
someone has more information w.r.t. new gcc versions, we
can still re-open it or open a new report, but it seems
unnecessary to keep old reports against 2.95 alive.
