Can not compile gcc3.1 on linux 2.2.12-20 (Redhat) i686 system

- Subject: Can not compile gcc3.1 on linux 2.2.12-20 (Redhat) i686 system
After running the following commands:
cd srcdir
mkdir objdir
cd objdir
../configure
make bootstrap
I got the following error:
/usr/bin/ld: gengenrtl: Not enough room for program headers (allocated
6, need 7)
/usr/bin/ld: final link failed: Bad value
colloect2: ld returned 1 exit status
I also just tried running make (without bootstrap option) and got the
following error:
checking whether the C compiler (/usr2/GNU/gcc-3.1/objdir-linux/gcc/xgcc
-B/usr2/GNU/gcc-3.1/objdir-linux/gcc/
-B/usr/local/i686-pc-linux-gnu/bin/
-B/usr/local/i686-pc-linux-gnu/lib/
-isystem
/usr/local/i686-pc-linux-gnu/include -g -O2 ) works... no
configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C compiler
cannot create executables.
make: *** [configure-target-libiberty] Error 1
