- Subject: gcc-3.1 on SuSE 6.2 doesn't build stage2
Hi,
I'm trying to build gcc-3.1 on SuSE 6.2 (among other and more recent platforms;)
which breaks at start of stage2:

echo timestamp > stage1_copy
echo stage2_build > stage_last
(cd stage1 && rm -f `echo main.o libbackend.a alias.o ... `)
echo timestamp > clean_s1

milkyway ldscripts > ld -v
GNU ld version 2.9.1 (with BFD 2.9.1.0.25)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I've checked the "Host/Target specific installation notes for GCC" in
http://gcc.gnu.org/install/specific.html#ix86-*-linux*
which says
i?86-*-linux*
You will need binutils 2.9.1.0.15 or newer for exception handling to work.
If you receive Signal 11 errors when building on GNU/Linux, then it is
possible you have a hardware problem. Further information on this can
be found on www.bitwizard.nl.
so my pretty old ld should still be ok.
any hint how to get sound that problem (without replacing binutils if possible,
because of compatibility concerns) ?
if I have to replace ld/binutils, which version is recommended
for such an old system (SuSE 6.2, glibc-2.1.1) ?
TIA,
Harald Koenig
