Investigate the --enable-long-long option.  Start here:

(which actually appears somewhat out of date since it is claimed to be
on by default yet I am fairly sure that a configuration check controls
the default condition.)

You should also read the pages under here if you are a C++ user
upgrading to gcc 3.0 since the support library completely changed
between 2.X and 3.X:
