Even better would be for the top-level configure to do something like

    if test $srcdir = . ; then
        # we are building in the source dir, uh-oh
        mkdir builddir
        cd builddir
        exec $CONFIG_SHELL ../configure $@
    fi

and make all builds "non-sourcedir builds".

This seems really obvious, therefore there is some obscure reason why this
wasn't ever done.  Probably something about multilibs.
