  As I said, I'm out of my depth here and I don't know if this is
an alpha issue at all, but I remember it coming up frequently on the
various gcc mailing lists, so it's worth a search of the archive.  It
would certainly make sense of getting a sig11 from the x-assembler,
and the solution would be to force 32 bit codegen from the compiler, 
and I don't know how that would be done, and I'm not even sure that
HOST_WIDE_INT != 32 necessarily means that the codegen is being done
in 64 bit mode.

  But, if all those things *are* going on, it would be the answer....
