Under Solaris, there is an option '-Y' that takes an argument and should be passed unchanged to the linker. The option is implemented, but if there is a space between the -Y and the argument, g++ chokes, but Sun's CC accepts this version. The Makefiles that come with Oracle 8i use the syntax with a space and break using g++.
