The last version I could build here on my IRIX 6.5 box is 
gcc version 2.96 20000510 (experimental)

Newer version fail during link
cc  -DIN_GCC     -O -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -rpath /usr/LOCAL/lib -o cc1  ...
ld32: ERROR   33 : Unresolved text symbol "gen_rtx_fmt_iuuis00s"
 -- 1st referenced by emit-rtl.o.
