Corss Compiler?

I've downloaded the compiler from the fiddes.net site (m68k-coff-gcc,
etc...), and as I understand it, it is supposed to compile for a target
Coldfire processor on a Windows host.
However, it won't assemble a very short file of only 22 assembly
instructions. The assembler outputs a 130Kbyte file, and then the objcopy
utility outputs a 350Kbyte file of S-records. When another assembler is
used, the output is only a 386byte file of S-records. Therefore, because of
the very large size of the output, I do not believe that is generating the
correct output. The GNU compiler is desired for compatibility with other
components in the system.
We are targeting the MFC5307.
The instructions used are:
m68k-coff-gcc -c test.s -o test.o
m68k-coff-objcopy -O srec test.o test.srec
test.s has 22 assembly instructions
test.o is 130Kbytes
test.srec is 350Kbytes
I get the same results if instead of using m68k-coff-gcc, I use
m68k-coff-as.
My questions are:
Is the assembler a native assembler?
Is the assembler capable of generating the output I want.
If yes, what am I doing wrong?
