:-) You have two datapoints on which you make your decision. But then
you admit that with the datapoints, it doesn't work. Now, if you want
to predict the future, go back to the past, grab gcc 2.0 2.1, 2.2.1,
2.3.x, 2.4, 2.5.7, 2.6, 2.7.1, 2.8.1, egcs 1.0.3, egcs 1.1.2 and gcc
2.95, and try them. You find that the feature doesn't often work.
Now, I guess, if your only demands are for a feature that might work,
or one that only works between the current release and the immediately
proceeding one, then I guess the option is useful.
