Martin,
I received a sugestion - saying that I should try using 'ld,as' from
the latest version of binutils. With these tools, gcc appears to
behave normally, and my test code works fine.
So the problem appears to be form the interaction of gcc with solaris
as/ld on solaris 2.7. For now, I think I have a working gcc.
