Looking at this again, I've decided to go ahead and check in the patch that
I have. I haven't been able to prove that the problem exists anywhere outside
the loop unrolling code, and some of the potential fixes involve changes to
the loop unrolling code, so this seems like the right place to put a patch
for now.
