I think Alexandre's initial guess may have been correct.
I really did get the failure in exactly the same spot three times in a row (I'm
not crazy). But, now I've started over again with egcs-1.1.1 using the default
flags, and I've gotten a failure in a different part of stage1.
In addition, the lm-sensors module is reporting an unusually high temperature for
my cpu and motherboard... So, it is looking very much like a hardware problem
now.
Sorry for the bad report - I really thought I had eliminated hardware as a
possibility..... I'll put in some new fans and try again when I can compile
without getting such a hot cpu.
