I tried once again with egcs-2.91.42 19980621 on sparc-sun-solaris2.5.1
with Sun as: WorkShop Compilers 4.X dev 18 Sep 1996.
It still won't work:
$ g++ -c foo.cc
/usr/ccs/bin/as: "/var/tmp/cca004Pd.s", line 251: error: can't compute value of an expression involving an external symbol
