problems compiling MySQL

I have the following trouble compiling MySQL 3.21.31 with the following
compiler:

[rwhelan@radserver1 mysql-3.21.31]$ gcc -v
Reading specs from /usr/lib/gcc-lib/i586-pc-linux-gnulibc1/pgcc-2.91.28/specs
gcc version pgcc-2.91.28 19980508 (gcc2 ss-980502 experimental)

I am using
-rwxr-xr-x 1 bin bin 1874736 Feb 2 01:05 /lib/libc.so.5.4.44*

and:
[rwhelan@radserver1 mysql-3.21.31]$ as -v
GNU assembler version 2.9.1 (i586-linux), using BFD version 2.9.1.0.6

Compiling previous versions of mysql with previsious versions of
pgcc would cause the compiler to eat up all the virtual memory
then die. Also pgcc seems to miscompile hylafax v4.0pl2
and bind-8.1.1 and bind-8.1.2

If there is anything I can do to help futher, let me know.
