Comparison of Win32 Console version of `gfortran` to CentOS 5 linux:
(if you view this article within 24 hours of its posting, the following
pastebin should be valid, if you wish to view the actual source:
 http://rafb.net/p/MDDhWI90.html)

e:\gfortran\test>gfortran uc.f95
e:\gfortran\test>dir
 Directory of E:\gfortran\test\*
 8-19-2007 7:45 <DIR> .
 8-19-2007 7:45 <DIR> ..
 8-19-2007 7:48 1,213,085 a.exe [a.out is 13,474 bytes under linux]
 8-18-2007 17:33 1,440 uc.f95 [identical source code ]
 8-19-2007 7:46 56 uconv.log
1,214,581 bytes in 3 files and 2 dirs 1,224,704 bytes allocated
  1,189,318,656 bytes free

e:\gfortran\test>strip a.exe
e:\gfortran\test>dir a.exe
 8-19-2007 7:50 114,688 a.exe [ouch!]

--- snip ---

The Win32 version of gfortran has been configured to not support shared libraries. In other words, the run time functions are included in the executable. The Linux version is linking to the library at run time, dynamically.
