That should be possible, albeit trickier. (Luckily, I'm pretty certain that unlike the recent change, it won't break the testsuite.)

Given that that one's trickier and of considerably lower priority, I'm not going to give it immediate attention, but I've filed an enhancement request for it in the GFortran bug database. (PR 29702)
