At least, my copy of "Fortran 90 explained" says so in chapter 9.10. $ gfortran-4.0 -v Reading specs from /usr/lib/gcc/i486-linux/4.0.0/specs Configured with: ../src/configure -v --enable-languages=c,c++,java,f95,objc --prefix=/usr --libexecdir=/usr/lib --with-gxx-include-dir=/usr/include/c++/4.0 --enable-shared --with-system-zlib --enable-nls --enable-threads=posix --without-included-gettext --program-suffix=-4.0 --enable-__cxa_atexit --enable-libstdcxx-allocator=mt --enable-clocale=gnu --enable-libstdcxx-debug --enable-java-gc=boehm --enable-java-awt=gtk i486-linux Thread model: posix gcc version 4.0.0 20040912 (experimental) (Debian 4.0-0pre0)
Confirmed.
The names should be uppercase by the standard. I couldn't confirm the requirement of leading spaces.
The uppercase problem is fixed by Paul's recent patch on mainline (will be fixed on 4.0 once it's reopened). Leave this bug open until someone can confirm if leading space is required for namelist output (all compilers I could test seems to put a leading space, but that's no proof).
The namelist modifications implemented over the last week have resulted in namelist io that is compliant with the standard and this bug is fixed, as of GCC 4.1.0 20050423.
