Time travel hasn't been invented yet, so the two choices are "patch" or "ship".

Indeed. I think that Benjamin is right to err on the side of caution here, in the sense that we really want to avoid incompatible changes going forward. So taking something out now, if we're not certain it's solid, is the right thing to do.
