We have this change in for some time now and the big C++ projects
(OpenOfficeOrg, KDE) are longing to use it.  Adding it to namespace
eventually sounds a good idea - but I prefer to get the current code
working first before we implement another solution.  I'd really prefer
to see these patches go in asap,
