I use all of the standard GNU tools on AIX, such as GNU Make.
This is not an AIX Make issue or an AIX-specific issue. I do not know
enough about the MULTI_DO infrastructure to fix this, but it is not
acceptable to leave multilib broken for targets such as AIX.
