Problem with cerr

I should like to extend Python with a third party C++ library and my own C++
code. In the third party library they use cerr to display error messages, but
when I create the shared library I need for Python, the symbol cerr is simply
I tried to declare all kinds of
" _IO_ostream_withassign cerr"-s, but without no success.
Could somebody help me?
