Just to make sure i did a complete "make bootstrap" of the 3.1 release 
(rather than the diffed version I was running before) and yes, the 
problem is gone...
...however the original PR was reported on SunOS jake 5.7 
Generic_106542-12 i86pc i386 i86pc so maybe someone should test this out 
before we close this one.
