Thanks Franz.  Your comment is enlightening and also implies we have to 
change ASAP many tests.

To Mark: Benjamin may comment on the XPASSes better than me, but, 
roughly, I think the point is that on non gnu-locale model systems (~ 
non glibc systems) those tests actually FAILs.
