It's enabled by default these days, *iff* the necessary support can be
discovered at configury time. The argument is that there's just too much
of an expectation that C99 be there to (gratuitously) not support long long,
now that we can do it without everything else breaking miserably.
It's the "iff the necessary support can be discovered" bit that will
cause problems.
