I have just (not five minutes ago) gotten a complete build under Solaris for
the first time in months, with minimal fiddling. Some of the changes are
Solaris-specific, but some of them are more general, including threads.
(In particular, if no threads are enabled, libio shouldn't try to do
threadsafe ops.)
I hope to post the general patches for approval within a day (needs more
testing). I won't check in the Solaris stuff until I get with Gaby on
some math difficulties.

Ah. Now I remember why we pronounce AIX as "aches". :-) Well, that may
need to be done...
