...or have I needlessly sidetracked myself( into the depths of gcc/g++)?

could someone comment on the above message, please. As far as I see,
there are only two options:
1) make g++ default to '--fno-builtin'
2) fix g++ so it creates the builtin function in the appropriate
namespace scope
(the noted behavior exists in 2.95.2 (-fhonor-std) and current cvs g++.)
