Do you prefer this approach or patching atomicity.h as per
http://gcc.gnu.org/ml/libstdc++/2003-01/msg00278.html which
would theoretically allow 386 builds? Does anyone
know if and when the latter is going to get committed?

That's what I was doing, but as per Lars, there seems to be a
hardcoded path problem.
