/usr/bin/egcs: gcc version egcs-2.91.66 19990314/Linux (egcs-1.1.2 release)
gcj: the one I just built.
The bottom line is that you can not (accidentally) rely on the gcc you
just built to built gcj -- it produces a bogus gcj. I'm sure this is a
transient bug that is probably gone by now, but when I found the bug,
I made sure I was using the default gcc compiler installed on my
machine (/usr/bin/egcs.)

No, you have to build gcj first, a recent one preferably.
