Compiling latest souces


In trying to compiling the latest sources, I've run into a problem.
During the compile, I get the following message:

gperf: command not found

Can anyone lend any assistance?  One thing I found strange though; I
was able to compile and install the latest version of egcs from the gnu
website just prior to this problem.  (It didn't include the java compiler
so I grabbed the version from Cygnus)

Any help would be appreciated.
