I assume the THREADSPEC setting is gcc specific?  I'm not sure I
understand what it does.

Hm, I first had to modify the configury for libjava and there we have this THREADSPEC. Later on we thought it might help to put the same changes into boehm-gc too. That's all I can say. If not needed there fine.
