I looked at the patch a little.
Do we really need to add config.sub, config.guess, etc? Can't we
somehow get them from the top-level? That would be better, I think.
Usually AC_CONFIG_AUX_DIR works, but there are oddities using it in
the gcc tree sometimes, as I recall.
My only concern about this patch is whether it will break some builds.
If you could try it with a cross and a canadian cross, that would
help. In particular I wonder whether having the ltdl configure be
generated by a newer autoconf will cause confusion...
