'make install' should cause libtool to invoke '/sbin/ldconfig -n
/usr/local/lib'.  When doing a DESTDIR install, libtool should
warn you that you may need to run 'libtool --finish /usr/local/lib'
after moving libraries to their final place (which then would run
ldconfig).  AFAIK mpc uses libtool.

Which piece was missing for you?
