I'll leave the install.texi part to Andrew, but I think he had a 
configure patch in mind to detect this earlier?

For the following, Merriam-Webster seems to indicate that "Alternately"
is proper English in this context, according to
  http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/alternately
