The problem I experienced was a missing last character of some
very long filenames when untarring. Some C++ header files with .hpp
prefix were untarred as .hp. Listing the files in the tarball displayed
the same filename truncation. Upgrading GNU tar to 1.15.1 fixed the
problem for me.
