I am not in contact with automake developers. I didn't go any farther than proving that an automake patch could fix the problem. The patch on the automake tree avoids make compatibility problems and so is better than mine. I think we just wait for the next automake release, unless someone wants to try to convince the automake developers that we need this patch. I do not plan to do this.
