Re: regarding CVS repository on Savannah

I understand that all of the GCC folks are concerned about the anonymous
mirrored CVS access that used to be provided from savannah, and the web
page updates.

As some of our help desk volunteers mentioned, we will have to wait until
we get other functionality working post-crack before working on mirroring.
We have to give priority on projects who are actually hosted on savannah
and on webpages hosted natively for www.gnu.org, not those that are
mirrored. Of course, if GCC were hosted on savannah, we would give it top
priority above all other projects since GCC is such a fundamental and
important project for the Free Software ecology.

Part of the work we are doing, and that which is causing delays for your
mirroring, is to harden the systems and make them more reliable with
better uptime for projects hosted natively. We don't meant to treat GCC
as second class; in fact, we'd prefer to treat it first class, as it is a
flagship for the GNU project. But, as a project, we do understand that
you've made a choice not to join the GNU project in one particular way --
in using and participating in our development services.

I hope the situation will someday change and you will be willing to come
back to the GNU project infrastructure, especially once we've implemented
the GPG-signing of commits (expected mid next year at the latest), as then
savannah will without doubt offer substantially more security and source
integrity than is offered by other CVS hosting facilities. But, for the
time being, we are happy to handle your special-case requests, but as with
dealing with most special cases, we have to make sure the general case is
solved and the regular users are happy before we can turn our attention
to odds and ends.
