Clearly you're not a marketing person... I think labelling it 4.0
rather than 3.5 has a positive effect in terms of possibly generating
more notice. The 4.0 label is more likely to get people to take
notice, which is good both in terms of warning people that it might
be disruptive, in getting people excited and looking forward to it,
and gaining the Gcc project a little publicity. And no-one can
accuse us up inflating version numbering - it's a perfectly reasonable
numbering change.
Compare the change from XFree86 3.x to 4.x. It was mostly an internal
change, barely visible to most users and applications, but it was a
major reworking of the structure of the server that the 4.0 label
was justified. (Plus not all front-ends I means devices supported
in 3.x were supported by 4.0.)
