I believe this hasn't been done before, so I'm posting this message
mainly so that people who want to do this in the future will find it
when searching the mailing list archives.

Thanks largely to Evan Jones, the XWT project's build process now
includes appropriate scripts and patches for constructing a
cross-{gcc,gcj} (easy) and cross-{ar,ranlib,ld,as} (hard) targeting
Darwin.

Sadly, we're using Apple's lame ld/as combo instead of binutils.
