Help with GCC

Please help me if you can

am hoping someone can tell me where am going wrong with my installation of
SSH 3.5p1.  I have a netrax1 that I have just installed Solaris 8.  I
downloaded the SSH software from the site. When it compile it does this

# ./configure

checking for gcc... gcc

checking for C compiler default output... configure: error: C compiler
cannot create executables

and the config.log looks something like this

bash-2.05# more config.log

This file contains any messages produced by compilers while

running configure, to aid debugging if configure makes a mistake.

It was created by configure, which was

generated by GNU Autoconf 2.53. Invocation command line was

  $ ./configure
