Indeed.  The alpha build fails on a peephole optimization; I created
bootstrap/9180 for it along with a small test case.

We could "#ifdef sparc" around the static declaration, though that doesn't
solve the real issue.  And I don't like conditional compilation in any
event.

So what's the right thing to do?  I'm happy to work on it, but the alpha
fix isn't really very obvious and I don't have a powerpc-linux machine.
