And with gcc 2.7.2 (Debian's gcc272 package).  I think this has been a de
facto part of gnu89 since at least 1997.

I think it's worth moving towards gnu99 compatibility anyway.  Of course,
while gcc 3.x remains so slow, egcs 2.91 compatibility is more important.
