Subject: [basic-improvements] Merge from mainline 2002-09-30

The mergepoint tag is gcc-3_4-basic-improvements-merge-20020930.
Bootstrapped i686-linux.

This merge was unusually painful because of all the spelling fixes
being applied to the mainline.  Are these truly appropriate for the
present stage?
