GCC 3.2 build failure on i686-pc-linux-gnu: bootstrap comparisonfailure

Building with `make bootstrap' fails with

  Bootstrap comparison failure!
  combine.o differs

Here is the contents of `config.status' in the build directory:

#!/bin/sh
# This file was generated automatically by configure. Do not edit.
# This directory was configured as follows:
../gcc-3.2/configure --with-gcc-version-trigger=/usr/local/distrib/gcc-3.2/gcc/version.c --host=i686-pc-linux-gnu --enable-shared --prefix=/usr/local --norecursion
# using "mh-frag" and "mt-frag"
config.status lines 1-5/5 (END)

The system is a Red Hat 7.3 GNU/Linux system with all the updates
installed.  Other relevant information:

$ uname -a
Linux zoltan.unisuv.it 2.4.19 #23 Sun Aug 4 18:03:23 CEST 2002 i686 unknown
$ gcc -v
Reading specs from /usr/local/lib/gcc-lib/i686-pc-linux-gnu/3.1.1/specs
Configured with: ../gcc-3.1.1/configure --prefix=/usr/local
Thread model: single
gcc version 3.1.1
$ rpm -q binutils
binutils-2.12.90.0.9-1

The final part of the output generated by `make bootstrap'
is below the signature.
All the best

     Roberto

P.S. I had no problem whatsoever to install GCC 3.1.1 on the same machine.
